Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania

Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa. It is in the northeast corner of Tanzania, close to the border with Kenya. Kilimanjaro is a volcano that is no longer active, and it is one of the biggest in the world. It rises 15,000 feet above the dry plains around it, and over 18,500 feet cover 2.5 square miles of its area. Under its ice dome, snow runs down long valleys that have formed in the sides of the mountain. The top crater of Kilimanjaro, which is called Kibo, is an amazing 1.5 miles across. Uhuru, the tallest mountain in Africa, is at the top of Kibo’s steep rim. In the middle of Kibo is a small, 600-foot-deep hole filled with sulfurous ashes. Kilimanjaro’s smaller second cone, Mawenzi (16,893 ft), is seven miles east of Kibo, on the other side of a long slope. Mawenzi is an old cone with sharp edges that have been worn down by weathering. Even though Mawenzi is lower, it is the harder mountain to climb, and you can’t get close to it without rock climbing and/or snow and ice climbing skills. Mawenzi is Africa’s third-highest peak.
