Route Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Marangu
Upon your arrival in Marangu, settle into your accommodation and take some time to acclimate to the altitude. Rest and prepare yourself for the exciting journey ahead. In the evening, meet your knowledgeable guide for a briefing and equipment check.
Day 2: Marangu to Mandara Hut (2,700m / 8,858ft)
Difficulty Level: Moderate
After a hearty breakfast, start your trek from Marangu Gate, located at an altitude of 1,860 meters. Pass through lush rainforests adorned with diverse flora and fauna. Enjoy the rhythmic sound of birds and monkeys along the way. Arrive at Mandara Hut, nestled among the vegetation, where you’ll spend the night.
Day 3: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut (3,720m / 12,205ft)
Difficulty Level: Moderate
Continue your ascent through the enchanting rainforest, taking in the beauty of nature surrounding you. The path gradually opens up as you enter the heath zone, revealing panoramic views of the valleys below. Reach the Horombo Hut, situated on a ridge with spectacular vistas of Mawenzi and the surrounding landscape.
Day 4: Acclimatization Day at Horombo Hut (3,720m / 12,205ft)
Difficulty Level: Easy
To aid acclimatization and increase your chances of reaching the summit, spend an extra day at Horombo Hut. This will allow your body to adjust to the high altitude. You can take short hikes to explore the surroundings, enjoy the stunning scenery, and rest to enhance your overall strength.
Day 5: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut (4,703m / 15,430ft)
Difficulty Level: Challenging
Embark on a challenging trek through the alpine desert, characterized by wide open spaces and sparse vegetation. The climb becomes steeper as you approach Kibo Hut, situated at the base of the Kibo summit cone. Take in the splendid views and get a good night’s rest as you mentally prepare for the final ascent.
Day 6: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak (5,895m / 19,341ft) and descent to Marangu
Difficulty Level: Extremely challenging
Begin your summit attempt in the early hours of the morning, following the steep and demanding trail towards Gilman’s Point. Witness the breathtaking sunrise as you continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. Celebrate your accomplishment before descending to Kibo Hut and further down to Marangu.
